Overview
Understory Art & Nature Trail is a unique multi-arts trail, a treasure trove studded along a 1.2km peaceful forest track. Over 100 artworks, specially commissioned by acclaimed local, state and visiting international artists, powerfully reflect their passion for the natural environment and sense of place. Described as ‘a love letter to the forest’, it aims to inspire people and deepen their appreciation of precious nature-spaces.
Understory had its origins in 2004, when two Northcliffe artists and other artists from across the South West, created ephemeral art trails in forests destined for logging in order to draw attention to their plight. The enthusiastic public response motivated Fiona Sinclair, the current Artistic Director of Understory, to propose a more permanent outdoor gallery which came to fruition in 2006 after extensive community consultation and volunteer commitment.
Understory is managed by a not-for-profit organisation, Southern Forest Arts and all proceeds are re-invested in the project and in the Northcliffe community. Many of the installations have been created in collaboration with the Northcliffe community, contributing meaningfully to local identity and pride.
